PEVCA Malta was pleased to meet with Ms Maria Luรญs Albuquerque, the EU Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union (SIU), to discuss the future of the islandโs private capital landscape.
Our delegation, led by PEVCA Malta Chairmanย Martin Galeaย and Secretary Generalย Herald Bonnici, was joined by representatives fromย SuperCharger Venturesย andย GO Ventures. Together, we highlighted how Maltaโs unique position as a cross-border hub can support the Commissionerโs mission to mobilise Europeโs "idle" capital.
With her extensive background as Portugalโs Finance Minister and her recent experience in the private equity and banking sectors, the Commissioner brings a highly pragmatic, "real-world" perspective to Brussels. She understands that for the SIU to succeed, we must bridge the gap between regulatory policy and the technical "pain points" faced by fund managers.
Our discussion focused on how Malta can lead the charge in mobilising capital:
โข Activating "Dormant" Capital: Malta holds โฌ40.5 billion in bank deposits. We discussed creating the right incentives to move these savings into the "real economy" through Private Equity and VC, fuelling innovation rather than sitting idle.ย
โข Strengthening the Ecosystem: We highlighted the need for the SIU to support the "architects" of this transition. Associations like PEVCA Malta need institutional capacity to guide our 70+ members through complex EU implementations.ย
โข Refining the "Passport": While vehicles like ELTIF 2.0 are excellent in theory, we discussed the need to reduce local regulatory friction. A fund authorised in Malta should enjoy a seamless journey across all Member States to ensure the EU "Passport" is truly effective.
Maltaโs economy grew by 5.9% in 2024, and with the right framework, our private capital sector is ready to help our SMEs scale far beyond our shores.ย
We look forward to a continued, collaborative dialogue with Commissioner Albuquerque to turn these shared goals into reality.
